Different types of antacids and precautions to follow

Antacids are a class of drugs used for treating the conditions caused due to acid imbalance in the stomach. The stomach produces hydrochloric acid to assist in breaking down the proteins in the food which causes the substances in the stomach to become acidic in nature. However, the stomach, duodenum and the esophagus are protected against the acid by a protective lining. When the amount of acid increases or the lining is not sufficient, this protective lining gets damaged and the acid leads to inflammation. This is where antacids come into the picture and help by neutralizing the acid in the stomach.
What are the different types of antacids?
There are a few reputed antacid brands such as ENO which can offer quick relief from all the symptoms of indigestion and acidity. However, depending upon their usage and content, antacids can be divided into the following categories
Aluminum carbonate antacids: These can be used to treat and manage the elevated levels of phosphate in the blood. Aluminum carbonate antacids bind phosphate in the intestine and prevent its absorption by the body. These can be consumed with a low phosphate diet to prevent formation of kidney stones.
Calcium carbonate antacids: These are consumed in order to treat calcium deficiency due to postmenopausal osteoporosis.
Magnesium oxide antacids: Magnesium oxide antacids are used when there is deficiency of magnesium either due to diet or medications leading to depletion of magnesium levels in the body.
Aluminum/ Magnesium antacids: These contain magnesium or aluminum and are used for treating bleeding disorders which are induced by ulcer.
