The skylights are kissed by the first rays of the sun, gets soaked in the flowing breeze, the daylight dances in to the indoors through skylights and the over flowing moonlight  streaming through it fills the home at night. Skylights are like gateways of natural light to your home and are awesome in its looks and appeal. But the bounty of nature has to accepted with its share of harshness unless you make adequate arrangement to protect your indoors from invading natural light. And it becomes necessary so many times during the day or night to use a screen that can control natural light so as to restrict its entry into your home.

Measuring and mounting tips

Like any other window treatment, getting the right measurement of the opening and the kind of mounting that would bring out its best appeal of design are important considerations in choosing the right type of shades. But taking measurements of skylights can be a daunting task. At which point of the skylight casing would you fit the shades so that it looks nice and serves the purpose of light control effectively? This is a question that has to be answered by considering the kind of casing of skylights that you have. Shades or blinds look best when it is flush mounted inside the casing just about two inches up  as skylight handles are left free to operate and  it is easier to operate the window coverings.

Fixing skylight shades

Skylight shades can be operated manually by using the handles but if the windows are perched high, you would need a skylight pole to operate it. Horizontal, vertical or sloped, skylight shades can be moved in any of these directions as it moves on tracks. This enables fixing of shades in any position smoothly with complete ease and minimum effort. For correct fitting of shades, sidetracks are fitted on the casing by drilling holes and then the shades are inserted into the tracks that give the smartest fit that you desire. The sleek looks and innovative designs of the shades add more enjoyment in your venture to enjoy nature from the comforts of your home.

Shades or blinds?

What’s there in a name if you derive the functionality that you need? The question arises because skylight shades as they are called are actually blinds and not shades because it has slats or vanes and not any continuous piece of fabric that is used for making shades. So, technically speaking, skylight blinds is the more correct name. But from the perspective of functionality it means the same whether we call it shades or blinds.

Materials for shades

Semi opaque light filtering fabrics is the staple choice for skylight shades and it can be thick spun fabric or thin dimpled fabric according to your choice. For those preferring a blackout, the three layered fabric with Mylar in the middle is ideal for a dark room.
